May 2026 Balance Changes

Giant Arrow Rework Explained

One of the biggest changes in this patch is the redesign of the Archer Queen’s Giant Arrow equipment.

Previously, Giant Arrow needed repeated damage increases whenever new Air Defense levels were introduced. Over time, this caused the equipment to become too strong at lower Town Hall levels.

To solve this, Supercell completely changed how the equipment works.

New Giant Arrow Effect

The Giant Arrow now deals:

2x damage against Air Defenses

while its normal damage against other buildings has been reduced.

Why This Change Matters

Before Update

After Update

Strong against almost everything

Specialized anti-air equipment

Difficult to balance long-term

Easier future scaling

Extremely powerful at low TH

More controlled strength

Massive general value

Better strategic identity

This means Giant Arrow will remain useful for Queen Charge setups, but players can no longer use it as a universal damage tool.

Clash of Clans Giant

Dragon Duke Nerfs

Dragon Duke is clearly the main target of this balance patch.

Supercell directly described the hero as: "a bit overtuned"

which confirms that current Dragon Duke strategies are performing too consistently.

The nerfs affect:

Dragon Duke

Dragon Rides

Inferno Dragon

Sky Wagon

Flame Blower synergy

Rocket Backpack interactions

The goal is simple:

Reduce low-risk air spam attacks

Clash of Clans Dragon Duke

Why Dragon Duke Was Too Strong

Current Dragon Duke attacks offer:

high survivability

easy funneling

automatic building clearing

forgiving pathing

strong air synergy

Many players could secure strong attacks without needing perfect spell timing or advanced planning.

Supercell now wants air attacks to require more skill and positioning.

Flame Blower June Mechanic Change

Although this adjustment arrives in June rather than May, it may become one of the biggest nerfs overall.

Currently, Flame Blower activates based on movement direction when combined with Rocket Backpack.

This allows Dragon Duke to:

fly through bases

automatically burn buildings

create easy funnels

clear structures while moving

In June, this interaction changes completely.

New Flame Blower Mechanic

The Flame Blower will now attack only in:

the direction the Duke is facing

instead of travel direction.

Expected Impact

Current System

New System

Automatic clearing

Manual positioning required

Easy air spam

Higher skill ceiling

Forgiving movement

Better timing needed

Strong auto-funneling

Harder base control

This is less about raw damage and more about increasing the mechanical skill required to use Dragon Duke effectively.

Dragon Rides Nerfs

Dragon Rides are also being toned down.

Several levels now spawn fewer support units, including:

fewer Minions

fewer Balloons

reduced pressure generation

This lowers the overwhelming swarm value that many air attacks currently rely on.

Previously, Dragon Rides could often overwhelm defenses simply through unit volume and automatic cleanup pressure.

After the update, players will need cleaner pathing and better support timing.

Inferno Dragon and Sky Wagon Adjustments

Inferno Dragon and Sky Wagon are also receiving nerfs as part of the broader anti-air balance direction.

Both units currently benefit heavily from:

strong Dragon Duke synergy

safe positioning

reliable sustained damage

easy offensive pressure

The update should make prolonged air attacks slower and less forgiving overall.

Clash of Clans Sky Wagon

Trap Damage Resistance Nerf

Another important adjustment is the reduction to trap resistance.

Old Value

50% damage reduction

New Value

40% damage reduction

This means air troops will now take more damage from:

Seeking Air Mines

Air Bombs

black mines

defensive traps

Crafted Defenses Are Getting Major Buffs

One of the most overlooked parts of the update is the massive improvement to crafted defenses.

Buffs include:

Buff Type

Effect

Attack Range

Increased

Attack Speed

Faster

Damage Radius

Larger

Burst Count

Higher

These changes are specifically designed to strengthen defensive consistency against air attacks.

Why Crafted Defense Buffs Matter So Much

Many players focus only on Dragon Duke nerfs, but stronger defenses may actually reshape the meta more heavily.

Improved defenses mean:

stronger anti-air coverage

harder funneling

more dangerous mistakes

less reliable spam attacks

Strategies that may struggle more include:

Dragon spam

Sky Wagon pushes

Dragon Rides

Inferno Dragon support attacks

Ground Attacks May Return to Meta

Supercell’s balancing direction is now very clear.

The developers want the game closer to:

Air ≈ Ground

instead of:

Air > Ground

Because of this, several ground strategies may become stronger after the patch.

Potential Meta Winners

Strategy

Expected Result

Queen Charge Hybrid

Stronger

Smash Attacks

More viable

Root Rider armies

PEKKA pushes

Better matchup spread

Multi-phase attacks

More rewarding

CWL Meta Changes

These balance changes arrive at an important time for Clan War League players.

The patch may affect:

base design priorities

anti-air trap setups

hero equipment choices

attack planning

defensive layouts

Many current CWL bases are heavily designed around stopping Dragon Duke spam. If air attacks become weaker, defensive building priorities could shift significantly.

Ore Economy Catch-Up System

Supercell also confirmed they are working on:

an Ore catch-up mechanic

to help players keep up with Epic Equipment progression.

Currently, many players struggle because:

new equipment releases happen too frequently

Ore income feels limited

upgrading multiple Epic items is difficult

The future system aims to make progression easier for:

newer players

returning players

F2P accounts

More details are expected in future updates.

Final Thoughts

The Clash of Clans May 2026 balance update is clearly designed to reduce automatic air spam gameplay and create healthier balance between air and ground attacks.

Dragon Duke will likely remain strong, but players will now need better positioning, smarter planning, and cleaner execution to achieve consistent results. At the same time, stronger crafted defenses and trap adjustments may dramatically change both CWL and Legend League strategies over the next few weeks.
